Appel à participation • experiments on dancing and time perceptions

experiments on dancing and time perceptions

Within the activities of my master dissertation (supervisor Dr. Argiro Vatakis ; http://www.csri.gr/index.php/en/staff/homepages/avataki.html) in the Postgraduate program of Basic and Applied Cognitive Science in the University of Athens, Greece, we will conduct two experiments on dancing and time perception at the Institute for Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music (IPEM), Ghent University (co-supervisor Prof. Marc Leman ; http://www.ipem.ugent.be/user/3).

Being a professional dancer myself, our main research interest is the link between acquired dance experience and the possible enhancement in time perception.
Thus, for our two experiments we need the participation of 10 professional dancers (in order to compare their performance with non-dancers).

The dancers participating in our study will be asked to perform some very simple dance steps at the lab in IPEM (Rozier str. 44, Ghent), while their movements will be recorded online by a motion capture system at a millisecond accuracy. The measurement will be done by placing two sensors in two different locations on the dancer’s legs.
The whole procedure does not last more than 2,5 hours with breaks included, so I will be needing you just for one day, the one that is more convenient to you.

The period I will be at Ghent in order to run the experiments is from the 10th of April until the 26th, 2012. That is, I will be available to schedule dancers for participation in the experiments at any of those dates.
Even though our budget is very limited, we can of course cover any travel expenses that might be needed in order for a dancer to arrive at Ghent (ex. train tickets inside Belgium).

If you are interested in participating in these experiments please contact me at elenisgou@live.com, tel. 0030-6942201364, or visit the linkhttp://edu.surveygizmo.com/s3/855385/dance.

As a professional dancer, I believe that the link between cognitive science and art can be proved very informative for both sides. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need more details about the project and its’ aims.
